June 17 is Icelandic National Day, chosen to mark the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, leader of the Icelandic independence movement in 19th century when Iceland was still a Danish colony.
In Icelandic, there are two words for patriotism: Þjóðernishyggja, which refers to patriotism, and Föðurlandsást, the love one feels for his or her own nation.
